Week five Berlin

This week we took a trip to Berlin and I had a great time exploring what Berlin had to offer. I really enjoyed the history of the wall of Berlin and all the museums we visited. The main difference between Erfurt and Berlin was the people. The city was very big and there were a lot of tourists which changed the feeling of the city. Erfurt is small and the people are older and don't have much diversity. Berlin has lots of young people and people from all different backgrounds.
The significance of these differences comes from that Berlin was once divided by the wall. I think this makes the people there very aware of what divisiveness can do to a population. Everyone there was very kind and warm. They smiled and used much friendlier nonverbal communication compared to the people of Erfurt.
I am personally much more comfortable in Erfurt because it's smaller and knowing where we are at and having control of where we want to be. In Berlin, it's busy and very diverse, this reminds me a lot of the big cities in the United States. The United States has gone through civil wars and division, just like Berlin. After having the DDR tour the tour guide mentioned that it wasn't all that terrible being a communist in Germany. People with families would live in big homes and experience a decent level of living. But I only think this represented a small amount of people in Communist Germany, I think the majority would live in poverty living off almost nothing. The problem I have with here is that theres no motivation in becoming an engineer or a trash man. In the end you still get paid the same. But even with the end of the cold war, the population tends to come together and live in peace and tranquility for some period of time. The people of Berlin are still learning how to be Berliners and I think that's similar to Americans trying to figure out their own identities as well.
I really enjoyed Berlin and missed out on a lot of things and hope to go back.
